Prayer for migrants and refugees

Lord God, You created all people in your image.  We adore you and we raise our hearts and voices to you.

We pray for the countries from which refugees have fled.  We pray for the people of those countries.

May there be peace among the people, reconciliation at all levels and human development for all.

We pray for those countries from which economic migrants come; we pray for all those who seek better living conditions for themselves and their families.

We pray for their leaders.  May they be concerned for the well being of their people.

We pray for all “foreigners” in our countries, those who find themselves in the slums and the poorest parts of our big cities, where they often suffer marginalisation and unemployment.

We pray for all those who have the power to make international laws and agreements: may they consider, not only the interests of their own countries, but also the situation of the poor countries of our world.

Help us to open our hearts, our homes and our Churches to foreigners, refugees and all those who seek political asylum so that they may feel welcomed and integrated in our society.

We pray for all Christians and men and women of good will.  May the Christian community born in the difference of cultures at Pentecost be open to migrants, not only to welcome them, but above all to create communion among the different communities and in this way live the universal dimension of the Church.

We ask this through Christ our Lord, who was a refugee and who pitched his tent among us.
